"The 76th plenary meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan was officially opened by Minister Kamalov, Chair of the Organising Committee. In his opening remarks Minister Kamalov highlighted developments in the cotton industry within Uzbekistan and welcomed delegates from around the world.
"I hope that the delegates of the 76th Plenary Meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee and participants in the 13th International Uzbek Cotton and Textile Fair, as well as all our guests, will see new prospects for cooperation and lay the foundation for mutually beneficial agreements."
There were also speeches from the chair of the International Cotton Advisory Committee, Ms Claudia Fontana Tobiasson, and the new ICAC Executive Director, Mr Kai Hughes, in which they informed delegates that the committee would be undergoing a major strategic review over the coming year in order to develop a stronger, more effective organisation to support member governments.
The need for better cotton promotion was also highlighted to counteract the increasing demand for synthetic fibres. The use of social media to promote positive messages about the benefits of cotton to consumers and to address disinformation about cotton was also encouraged.
