Economics and Statistics

Background

The Economics and Statistics Information Section (ESIS) became part of the International Cotton Advisory Committee’s work when it was decided to establish a Secretariat at the fifth Meeting of the ICAC in Washington, D.C. in May 1946.

ESIS collects data on the cotton market worldwide and is a leading source of international data on the world cotton industry. It estimates cotton supply by country, forecasts cotton supply and use by country, and tracks exports by destination and imports by origin. It also measures and forecasts cotton consumption and cotton’s share of fiber demand in the world and by region and is the primary source in the world for statistics on fiber demand.

ESIS also forecasts the season-average Cotlook A Index (a global indicator of cotton lint prices) with an econometric model based on cotton market fundamentals: the ICAC Price Model 2007.

The Secretariat draws upon coordinating agencies in member countries as well as other official and private sources in both member and non-member countries to compile statistical data.
