Welcome

The 65th Plenary Meeting of the ICAC since 1939 will be held during 11-15 September 2006 in the dynamic city of Goiânia, capital of the state of Goiás in central Brazil. Committee and Task Force Meetings will be held on 10 September. The Governor of Goiás, The Honorable Marconi Perillo, is taking a special interest in the meeting and will ensure that the extraordinary hospitality of the Brazilian people is extended to plenary meeting participants.

Goiás is the third largest producer of cotton in Brazil and exports approximately 30% of production. Goiás is also a center of cotton textile production in Brazil.

The theme of the 65th Plenary Meeting will be “The Social and Environmental Impacts of Cotton Production and Use”. The 65th Plenary Meeting will provide opportunities for information exchange and consensus building around best industry practices. The meeting will showcase the beneficial impacts of cotton production and use in the achievement of social objectives, and the meeting will showcase the extraordinary growth of Brazilian cotton production and improvements in quality.

The Organizing Committee for Goiânia 2006 is composed of representatives of the Brazilian Cotton Growers Association, the Cotton Institutions from the State of Goiás, representatives of research organizations and representatives of exporters, the textile industry, the Government of Goiás an the Government of Brazil.

You are invited to visit Goiânia in September 2006 for the 65th Plenary Meeting.

Site of the Meeting

The 65th Plenary Meeting will be held in the Goiânia Convention Center, one of the most modern and complete in Latin America. The Convention Center is located downtown close to hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. The Conference Center features two auditoriums for the conduct of Open, Plenary and Breakout Sessions. There are ample spaces for trade exhibitions, an internet café and areas for coffee, tea and meals. The entire Conference Center is WiFi enabled.

Blocks of rooms have been reserved in nearby hotels. Shuttle bus service will be provided between hotels and the Conference Center. Hotel information will be provided in May 2006 when registration begins.

Goiânia is strategically located less than 200 kilometers south of Brasilia. It is rated one of the best towns in Brazil for quality of life with a modern infrastructure, nice traffic flow and beautiful parks. The population of Goiânia is 1.3 million. The average temperature in September is 22 degrees Centigrade.

International Cotton Genome Initiative Research Conference

The ICGI 2006 Research Conference (external link) will be held in Brasilia, Brazil, following the ICAC Plenary meeting; 18-20 September, 2006. There will be two and one half days of ICGI meetings.
