The 67th Plenary Meeting of the ICAC since 1939 will be held during 17-21 November 2008 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. This will be only the second plenary meeting in the history of the ICAC to be held in West Africa. Given the importance of cotton to the economies of African countries, and the role of Africa in discussions on cotton in the WTO, it is highly appropriate that the Committee is meeting in Ouagadougou.

Burkina Faso is the one of the largest cotton producing country in Africa, and Ouagadougou is the administrative, economic and cultural center of the nation. The city was established in the 15th century, and a loose translation of the name Ouagadougou is, “where people get honor and respect.” There are many cinemas, nightclubs, and French, American, and Zaka cultural centers. Other attractions include the National Museum of Burkina Faso, the Moro-Naba Palace (site of the Moro-Naba Ceremony), the National Museum of Music, and several craft markets.

Site of the Meeting

The 67th Plenary Meeting will be held in the International Conference Centre in Ouagadougou. The Sofitel Ouaga 2000, a five star hotel built in 2005, will serve as the main conference hotel. The hotel is located just 300 meters from the Conference Centre.

The social program during the 67th Plenary Meeting will take advantage of the culture of Burkina Faso to provide a unique African experience. For those who are interested, there will be a technical tour on Wednesday during the plenary meeting to view harvesting, ginning and research activities and to visit fields of biotech cotton being developed South of Ouagadougou.

The theme of the 67th Plenary Meeting proposed by the Organizing Committee is, "Technologies for Cotton Development". The major topics for discussion was presented to the Standing Committee last February 2008, and a specific agenda for preliminary approval has been presented to the Standing Committee in April 2008. Invitations to the 67th Plenary Meeting and information for registration are being mailed late April 2008.
