Seventh Open Session - The Role of the Public Sector in the Cotton Industry
Summary of the Session
The role of the public sector in agriculture, whether in research, regulation or other areas, is changing over time. In the area of research into biotech varieties, the private sector has become dominant and efforts in the public sector have been curtailed. Government funding and focus have changed and fundamental research has been downgraded. This session will examine the impact of public sector policies on the production and trade of cotton.

Third Breakout Session - New Challenges to Cotton: The Perspective of Developing Countries
Summary of the Session
Most cotton is produced in developing countries, in which costs of production are rising, yields are stagnating and input use has reached its peak, while rates of return are frequently falling. This scenario is diminishing the enthusiasm to continue producing cotton. Developing economies that rely heavily on cotton and its related industries may suffer harmful effects in the long term. This session will highlight the most important challenges faced by cotton producers in developing countries and propose measures to improve the long-term viability of cotton growing.

Fourth Breakout Session - Best Practices in Cotton Ginning
Summary of the Session
The preservation of quality during post-harvest processing is increasingly important for the spinning and textile industry. Ginning must gently remove fibers from seeds, avoid damage to fibers and seed, minimize ginning losses and eliminate as much trash as possible. The objective of this session is to discuss and showcase best ginning practices in order to enhance efficiency, preserve quality and save fiber.

Fifth Breakout Session - Modern Practices in Instrument Testing
Summary of the Session
Trading in cotton is facilitated by instrument testing, which builds trust, integrity, confidence and a sense of neutrality among supply chain agents. However, the use of instrument testing results in the cotton trade is still relatively low. Sixth Breakout Session - Developments in the Transfer of Technology
Summary of the Session
The development of technology has progressed at a much faster pace than the transfer of this technology to producers. Electronic means and other developments have opened up new avenues to meet the needs of the farming community. This session will showcase the latest tools and techniques being developed and used to disseminate the research work carried out by scientists to cotton growers, in order to make cotton production a more efficient business at the farm level.
