09:00     First Open Session - Sustaining Cotton Growth: Incorporating Climate Dynamics
Summary of the Session
This  session  will address  the increasing  costs  and reduced  returns  caused  by climate-  and weather- induced instability in cotton production, which have a direct impact on its future viability. Climate change will have long-term impacts, which are hard to simulate and predict at this time but must be analyzed in terms of research priorities and preparedness. This session will examine research on extreme weather impacts and the integrated influence of climate change, as well as discuss appropriate public policies and other relevant responses.

Chair by Prof. Kausar Abdullah Malik, Forman Christian University, Lahore, Pakistan

Speakers:
10:30     Coffee/Tea
11:00     Third Open Session - Reducing the Water Footprint of Cotton
Summary of the Session
Cotton has been criticized for the intensive use of water in its production and processing, even though 40% of the world cotton area is grown under rainfed conditions and the volume of water used in cotton production is only half that of rice and sugarcane. This session will examine water usage in cotton, as well as propose ways in which to promote the efficient use of water and minimize losses in the field, as well as to economize water use in textile processing.

Chair by Mr. Hammaad Naqi, Director General CEO, WWF, Pakistan

Speakers:
11:00     First Breakout Session - Reducing Contamination in Picking & Handling
Summary of the Session
The spinning  and textile  industries  have become  more sensitive  to contamination  with foreign matter, such as plastics and polypropylene. The inclusion of some plant material from the field is unavoidable, although specific measures can be implemented to minimize trash pick-up from the field and eliminate contaminants during ginning and spinning. Contaminants, especially seed coat fragments and synthetic materials, added during harvesting and handling of seedcotton, reduce yarn and fabric quality by creating serious defects. Speakers will discuss methods to minimize contamination.

Chair by Mr. Sohail Harral, Senior Vice President Pakistan Ginners Association (PCGA)

Speaker:
12:30     Lunch
13:45     Fourth Open Session - Overcoming Textile Industry Challenges
Summary of the Session
This session aims to highlight the challenges, beyond the quality of raw material, faced by cotton further downstream in the value chain and examine proposals to create a more sustainable textile industry.

Chair by Mr. Abdul Rahim Soomro, Secretary Industries Sindh Region, Pakistan

09:00     Seventh Open Session - The Role of the Public Sector in the Cotton Industry
Summary of the Session
The role of the public sector in agriculture,  whether in research,  regulation  or other areas, is changing over time. In the area of research  into biotech  varieties,  the private sector has become  dominant  and efforts  in  the  public  sector  have  been  curtailed.  Government  funding  and  focus  have  changed and fundamental  research  has  been  downgraded.  This  session  will  examine  the  impact  of  public sector policies on the production and trade of cotton.

Chair by Mr Muhammad Abid Javed, Secretary, Ministry of National Food Security & Research, Paksitan

Speakers:
09:00     Third Breakout Session - New Challenges to Cotton: The Perspective of Developing Countries
Summary of the Session
Most  cotton  is  produced  in  developing  countries,  in  which  costs  of  production  are  rising,  yields are stagnating and input use has reached its peak, while rates of return are frequently falling. This scenario is diminishing  the  enthusiasm  to  continue  producing  cotton.  Developing  economies  that rely  heavily  on cotton and its related industries may suffer harmful effects in the long term. This session will highlight the most important challenges faced by cotton producers in developing countries and propose measures to improve the long-term viability of cotton growing.

Chair by Mr Afaq Tewana, President FAP, Pakistan

11:00     Eighth Open Session - Challenges to Cotton: Confronting Inter-fiber Competition
Summary of the Session
Cotton’s share of total fiber consumption has steadily declined over the last 25 years. This session will highlight  the  challenges  faced  by  cotton  from  man-made  fibers,  especially  polyester,  and propose measures to improve its competitiveness.

Chair by Mr Kanwar Usman, Director RDA, Ministry of Textile Industry, Government of Pakistan

Speakers:
11:00     Fourth Breakout Session - Best Practices in Cotton Ginning
Summary of the Session
The preservation of quality during post-harvest processing is increasingly important for the spinning and textile  industry.  Ginning  must  gently  remove  fibers  from  seeds,  avoid  damage  to  fibers  and seed, minimize  ginning  losses  and eliminate  as much  trash  as possible.  The objective  of this session  is to discuss and showcase best ginning practices in order to enhance efficiency, preserve quality and save fiber.

13:30     Meeting of the Drafting Group (Delegates only)
14:00     Fifth Breakout Session - Modern Practices in Instrument Testing
Summary of the Session
Trading in cotton is facilitated by instrument testing, which builds trust, integrity, confidence and a sense of neutrality among supply chain agents. However, the use of instrument testing results in the cotton trade is still relatively low. This session aims to discuss recent developments in instrument testing, especially in regard to adding marketing and utility value to cotton.

16:00     Sixth Breakout Session - Developments in the Transfer of Technology
Summary of the Session
The development of technology has progressed at a much faster pace than the transfer of this technology to producers. Electronic means and other developments have opened up new avenues to meet the needs of the farming community.  This session will showcase  the latest tools and techniques  being developed and used to disseminate the research work carried out by scientists to cotton growers, in order to make cotton production a more efficient business at the farm level.
